Brseč
Perched on a steep rock, 157 meters above sea level, this medieval town offers a spectacular view. But, such is the view of this town as well. The town has a view of the islands Cres, Unije, Susak and Mount Učka. The very first traces of living date from prehistoric times, whereas Brseč was first mentioned in written sources in the 11th c. The ring of the Liburnian hill-fort is visible in today's layout of Brseč, it was the basis for construction of medieval towers and walls and those built later. Incorporated into the row of peripheral houses are the remains of fortification and castle. The historic core is a protected cultural monument.
In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Pula bishop, the Devins, Counts of Gorizia, and finally to the County of Pazin. It was severely damaged in the Uskok War in the beginning of the 17th c.
The beauty of its sacral structures is displayed in the massive belfry of the Parish Church, which also had a defensive purpose, the Parish Church of St. George with Late Gothic frescoes and wood carved altars and altar palas from the 17th c., as well as Romanesque Church of St. Stephen at the cemetery. Dominating on top of the cliff above the Brseč coast is St. Mary Magdalene's Church from the 15th c.
Brseč is also the native town of the writer Eugen Kumičić, who described it in his many works.
