nel tratto medio-inferiore del Quieto si viaggiava anche trasversalmente: lo confera il fatto che gli abitanti di castagna erano noti “battellieri”.

la località risulta popolata fn dalla preistoria. Nelle fonti d’archivio compare per la prima volta come Villa de Castan nella lista dei beni donati ai patriarchi d’Aqui-leia (sec. XI). Dopo l’amministrazione dei signori di Duino e dei conti di Gorizia, cade sotto gli Asburgo ed è infne conquistata da Venezia (sec. XVI). Secondo fonti scritte, castagna assieme a Piemonte d’Istria fu acquistata a un’asta da G. contarini, nelle cui mani rimase fno al sec. XVIII. I Veneziani destinarono a castagna un ruolo gregario nella difesa di Piemonte. All’entrata nella località si apre la piazza con la chiesa parrocchiale, il campanile e una loggia cittadina. Gli edifci sono dei sec. XVIII e XIX. la chiesa parrocchiale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo risale al sec. XVII, mentre la chiesa cimiteriale dedicata a S. Stefano al sec. XII.

Castagna / Kostanjica

Te lower andmiddle course of themirna River , were sailed transversally as well, which is testifed by the transport activity of the kostanjica inhabitants, known as the kostanjica rafters.

Te town was inhabited in prehistory. It was frst mentioned in the 11 th c. as Villa de Castan on the list of property ofered to the Patriarchs of Aquileia. After the administration of the Devins and counts of Gorizia, it was under the rule of the Habsburgs, and from the 16 th c. under Venice. Written sources speak of it being pur-chased together with Završje at auction by G. contarini, who kept possession of it until the 18 th c. It was intended by the Venetians to have an auxiliary function in the defense of Završje. At the entrance of the town is a square with the parish church, reconstructed town loggia and belfry. Te houses were built in the 18 th and 19 th cc. Te Parish church of SS. Peter and Paul dates from the 17 th c., while the cemeterial church from the 12 th c. is dedicated to St. Stephen.
