Te village at the highest altitude of the Šavrinska hills , it is said, was named after the apple groves (pomi) that once spread over the surrounding area in the lee of Pomjan Hill. Tis is a fertile area, rich in water, surrounded by the val-leys of Badaševica and Rokava rivers, tributaries of Dragonja, which has always been a favorite meeting place for travelers. owing to the fact that in ancient times the main Roman road leading to Pula passed through Pomjan, the area is rich in ar-chaeological fnds.
In the village is the Parish church of St. George with an unusual belfry, and the church of St. Mary’s Nativity, with remains of frescoes from the 15 th c. and Glagolitic inscriptions, the old-est of which dates from 1439. Te preserved frescoes are the fnest examples of medieval mural painting in the hinterland of koper.
Tis natural border of sheer limestone cliffs , be-tween the continental part of Slovenia and Slovenian Istria is 20 kilometers long and stretches along the Slovenian-croatian border, from Socerb toMlini. Te area presents a natural transi-tion from the warmer Istria to the colder karst area, a mixture of continental and Mediterranean climate with numerous natural beauties. Te alteration of limestone and fysch, as well as fragmented relief provide ideal conditions for a wide variety of plant and animal species.
Along the karst edge there are several partly preserved forts and towers erected by the Venetians as a defense against the Habsburgs. Because of the urban design which is ideally incor-porated into the landscape and typical examples of traditional architecture, the villages Črni kal, Črnotiče, Gračišče, Hrastov-lje, kubed, Podpeč and Socerb have the status of protected cultural heritage.
