In a sequence of fortifcations and towns lined on the hill as a wreath adorning the river val-ley, lies oprtalj. Strategically positioned above the river, it was once a fortifcation surrounded by walls. Houses were later built against the town walls, and among them is the hardly observable former town gate. opposite the gate stands the great Venetian loggia with a lapidarium, and beside it on the high walls, a plateau with a view reaching as far as the sea, over the woods, vineyards, the rich and fertile area, evoking the historic dimension of the town acquired by its location.

Small medieval houses, paved streets and town walls spread the spirit of past times. Te Parish church of St. George bears a unique belfry whose top does not end with the characteristic pyramid shape, but kept its original features as a tower, from the 16 th c. Nearby are the church of the Blessed VirginMary, painted with fres-coes, and the church of St. Roch, from the 16 th c.

Tra le rocche e le cittadine che ornavano la valle del fume Quieto come una collana di perle posate sui suoi colli, va annoverata anche Portole. Stra-tegicamente posizionata sul fume, a suo tempo Portole fu una fortezza protetta da mura. Nel corso della storia, a ridosso dei bastioni, si sono costruite le case, fra le qua-li oggi si scorge a malapena quella che fu la principale porta cittadina. Proprio davanti a essa è posizionata la grande loggia veneziana con il lapidario; di poco disco-sta, sugli alti bastioni, vi è una spianata da dove la vista si estende fno al mare sforando boschi, vigneti e un’area rigogliosa e fertile, rievocando così la dimensione storica della città, sviluppatasi grazie a questa sua collocazione. le casette medievali, i viottoli lastricati e le mura cit-tadine ci immergono nello spirito di quell’epoca. la chie-sa parrocchiale di S. Giorgio si distingue per da un singo-lare campanile: non ha la caratteristica forma a cuspide, ha bensì mantenuto la sua struttura originale di torre (sec. XVI). Nelle vicinanze ci sono la chiesetta afrescata di Santa Maria e la chiesetta di S. Rocco del XVI secolo.
