Čepićko Field - Kršan - Boljun Castle - Lupoglav

Lupoglav

Just as Boljun, ever since the distant past Lupoglav has stood along important roads and strategic points. The area was populated in prehistory, and in the Middle Ages a castle on a cliff overlooking the village Gorenja Vas was built. The village Dolenja Vas also belonged to it.  In the 11th c. it was given to the Patriarch of Aquileia by the Bavarian prince as a gift, together with the surrounding Lupoglav property. The property was managed by several vassal families, and afterwards it became a part of the County of Pazin. In the 17th c. it was owned by the Brigido family, who built a new fortified complex below the old castle, on the road between Vranja and Roč.

The castle consists of a completely preserved central two-story residential building with economic areas on the ground floor. It is fortified with walls, with a wall walk, loop-holes and square towers. On the outer side, against the eastern walls a stable was built, which was converted into living space in the 20th c. The present-day settlement developed around the castle in the 19th and 20th cc., especially after the railroad line was built.
