Lim Bay - Kloštar - Kontija - Dvigrad

Lim bay

Cut into the rich vegetation with an unusual color of the sea, it simply calls for exploration. This is in fact a sunken karst valley on the western coast of Istria, situated between Rovinj and Vrsar, 11.5 kilometers long and 600 meters wide in average. It is often mistakenly referred to as fjord and channel, which does not correspond to its formation. Namely, the bay was created after the last glaciation, when the sea level rose and flooded the valley of the Pazinčica, that later became an underground river.
The slopes that lean against the bay are up to 150 meters high, partly covered with macchia and wooded, create the image of a canyon. The bay represents a natural attraction because the coasts, due to the unequal positions in relation to the Sun, have different vegetation: the northern one, closer to Vrsar is overgrown with low thicket of juniper and fennel, while the other, towards Rovinj, is covered with underbrush and oak. On the northern side one can see four openings of larger caves, while beneath St. Martin, in the part covered with macchia, is the opening of Romuald’s Cave, a precious site of the first people and life on the Peninsula, and later used as a refuge of hermits.

The bay is a protected landscape; in the category of natural heritage under protection it is declared a special marine reserve. Namely, owing to the special composition of water where the salinity is low and the concentration of acids is high, the flora and fauna of the channel is diverse, which is another reason why Lim Bay is suitable for fish, oyster and shell breeding.
