St. Flor
A view of the church through the portal of the perimeter wall reminds us of Mexico. The only ornament on the facade is the Baroque bell gable decorated with a sculpted head and volutes of the broken pediment. Inside it remains a Gothic bell. With its semi-circular apse, whose typology is frequent in Istria, it does not provide elements for a more precise datation. However, its transennae, stone screen windows on the southern wall, help us date the church to the 11th c. Also, the church titular, St. Flor confirms such an early dating. There are remains of frescoes only in the apse. In the lower part is a row of Apostles and above them a hybrid scene of Christ in Majesty and Deisis. Christ in the mandorla is carried by four angels. On the left side is the Virgin Mary turned towards Christ, and on the right St. Flor in bishop's robes. All figures are looking towards the visitor, except Christ, whose gaze sideways disappears into the distance. In his right hand he holds a book, on the left side of which is the Latin phrase from the Vulgata, the Gospel according to John, directed to the Pharisees: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life, and on the right is the very beginning of the Gospel according to John: In the beginning was the Word.This is one of the longest inscriptions of this type.
The restoration interventions on the mural painting were executed before Word War I, during the Austrian rule by Hans Viertelberger. The face of the lower right side angel was drawn by the restorer, to differentiate it from the original, according to the Romanesque pattern that reminds us of the angels in St. Foška's Church in Batvači.
