Paz

High on the hilltop overlooking the Boljun field, stands Paz, resembling an eagle's nest, with a superb view of the surroundings. A castle was erected on this site because of the strategic and defensive importance, just like many others that were built in the interior of Istria. It was mentioned for the first time in the 12th c. as Pas, Pass, later Pasperc and Passberg, as the property of the Patriarchs of Aquileia, belonging to the Boljun estate. In the 14th c. it became part of the County of Pazin. In the beginning of the 16th c. Paz was taken over by the Barbo family who left an indelible imprint on this area in the centuries to come: they built a tower near Paz, renovated the castle and built Belaj Castle.
