Šumber
Located in the direction of Labin, on the old road from Pićan to Kršan, in the hamlet Stari Grad, are the ruins of the medieval castle from the 13th c., which was once the border between the Venetian and Austrian part of Istria. Its name derives from the noble family Schomberg or Schemperger, who owned the castle until the end of the 14th c. Šumber is located on the eastern elevation of the Raša River Valley and end of Čepić field overlooking the Raša Valley and its fertile fields, and towards the east, offering a view of the Labin plain.
During the Middle Ages it changed owners: from Venetian feudal lords to Austrian owners of large estates based in Lupoglav, whereas entire Šumber was destroyed in the local wars between the Venetians and Austria. The local population mostly engaged in grape growing and in 1920 the mining of bauxite started in the vicinity. Below the Castle is the Church of SS. John and Paul from the 17th c., and the Church of Our Lady of Cornel from the 15th c. was erected beside the European Cornel tree where the Virgin Mary appeared, in the middle of Šumber. The Church of St. Quirinus at the cemetery has a Glagolitic inscription from the 16th c.
